A pin is a unique number that will serve as your electronic signature. You can get one at http://pin.ed.gov
Organizing documents and completing your taxes
You will need records of you and your parents income information for the last year.
You will find here a list of needed documents for a successful sign-up.
Filling out the FAFSA
1. Go to http://fafsa.ed.gov, official homepage(!) and fill out the FAFSA with your and your parents (if you are dependent) personal details. Filling out will be easy now, because you previously prepared the required documents.
2. Complete the application and sign it electronically with your unique PIN number, which you got it from http://pin.ed.gov
3. After you have applied you will receive a Student Aid Report(SAR) within a few weeks(maximum of four weeks). The report will contain your data.
If there are corrections needed (errors, missing documents ) then you may submit them as soon as possible to not loose time.
On the upper right corner of the front page of the report, you'll see the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). EFC is an estimate amount you and your family can contribute to your school expenses. The EFC estimated figure is sent to your scholarship agency, and also to the colleges you listed on the FAFSA.

Consult with your professors, college admissions counselors for updated informations about FAFSA.
Apply as early as possible, right after the 1st of January. Colleges set their FAFSA deadlines before the official June 30, federal due date.
List as many colleges as you can on your application.
